Plays, Programming, and the Month of Much Writing

      By Ravenhawk | November 5, 2006

Welcome to November, ladies and gents.
In the days since our last update I went to a play, a fiction reading, and took an Exam in Visual Basic. Why is this important to you?
Why, because it means I’ve had no time in my schedule to prepare I proper article for you.
The play was Death of a Salesman, I recommend reading it if you can’t go to a showing.
The Exam wasn’t hard, but it had a take-home component. I have to get work done on my final project for the class, making sure to meet certain milestones. It’s due monday. I spent a nice amount of time on it today, but it shall probably devour a large chunk of tomorrow as well.
I’m creating a D&D version 3.5 Character generator. Mostly because it was the first thing that came to mind. There are many things that I had assumed would be very simple in the programming that it turns out, aren’t that easy.
For instance, I haven’t the slightest clue how dropdown boxes work. I eventually figured out how to get the options in the box, by using the list property. Now I merely need to figure out how to access the portions of the list. And how to make it so that a particular option can only be selected in one box at a time. Everything is set up in arrays, as I’m sure is rather important.
My VB book isn’t acting particularly helpful. I thought Microsoft might have a helpful website, and while they do have tutorials and things, they mostly focus on Visual Basic 2005. I use 6.0.

The other time consuming activity I’m choosing to take part in, once again, this year is National Novel Writing Month. Basically the idea is, during the month of november, to write a 50000 word story. I did it the last two years, and failed to finish both years. I’d rather like to finish this year. I didn’t get to write at all yesterday due to the fiction reading I had to go to. (I actually don’t know the author, or book’s name, sadly. So, while I could critique his reading etc., something tells me I shouldn’t turn anything in until I figure that out.)

Anyway, while it has already started, its only been three, almost four, days. One could probably still catch up. And even if you lower your standards a bit from 50k, NaNoWriMo is a fun experience.
I’d recommend just about anyone check it out at http://nanowrimo.org
And now, I’m off to go do some writing. I have 3000 words to make up today.

      Until next time, Comrades.
