Playing in the Sandbox: Spore and Lego
By Ravenhawk | March 15, 2007
The genre which is becoming known as sandbox games is one I’m getting pumped over at the moment. I tried Second Life briefly and, although the game had great potential, was rather disappointed. Their controls were complicated and everything was far too commercialized.
At the moment there are two games I’m looking forward to. The first, like many others, is Spore. I’ve played a few games that were on the same basic premises, building up a creature from a single celled organism, but those were simplistic, single player games, not holding nearly the scope that Spore promises to.
I love games that enable you to build things, and because of this the idea of world building is always appealing. And once I’ve built that world, whats better than to send my creatures forth to show how awesome they are in comparison to other’s worlds?
The other game that I’m looking forward to, I don’t actually know much about but the name: Lego. Lego recently announced that they were going to make an MMO. The brand name alone brings wild speculation. Will we be able to build structures out of lego blocks? We better be able to.
I loved legos as a kid and I’ve still got my giant tub of them. I’d like nothing more than to be able to get a virtual version of that tub and show off my mad lego skillz to the world. And maybe they could put codes inside the real sets of legos to redeem for blocks in the virtual lego land?
Then I could get more legos in the game from my little brother getting real life legos.
Hmm…
It’s a fun thing to think about.
Until Next Time, Comrades.
