    • [Blanks has Joined the Game]

      By Ravenhawk | January 22, 2008

Seeing as my blog has been suffering a bit lately from my lack of motivation when I don’t have something specific to talk about, I’ve enlisted a bit o’ help. Blanks is a longtime friend of mine and guild leader of Radical Dreamers, a Dream of Mirror Online guild. He’s going to be posting a review of DOMO relatively soon…

And that, would be that. Felt the readership may want to know who this strange new person was posting content on the blog. Look forward to rad updates from myself and the new addition to the crew.

      Lack of Updates

      By Ravenhawk | October 15, 2007

I must apologize for the lack of updates lately, been busy with class, work, and generally being a lazy ass. However, I should be getting my arse back in gear soon and reverting back to at least a weekly update. (Aiming for the weekend times, but, you know, I float around generally)

Now that I’ve got a new job in the university records center helping to reprogram their database, I should be posting some more things about the wonderful Horrors of Visual Basic (Haven’t had any of those post in about six months) and the greatness of SQL programming. Besides this, I have a few games that I’ve been jamming out to like crazy that hopefully you’ll get to hear about.

In other news, I’ll give a million kudos points to anyone who can make up a good slogan for me. I suck and the slogan game and keep getting game overs whenever I try to play it. ’tis quite sad.

      Finally moving

      By Ravenhawk | August 24, 2007

If the blog suddenly becomes ugly, and/or stops working for a bit, it’s because I’m in the process of finally moving it over to my own domain. Sadly, this means I’ll have to temporarily change over to the new blogger, which means my blog will become rather hideous for awhile. (Maybe that’s being a bit dramatic, but I do like my three columns) But if all goes well, I should be moved into wordpress by tomorrow, if not the end of the night.

      Edit: 8:10 pm, PST;

Well, the move is done. Although there were a few errors involved, mainly the attribution of all TheSwiftEye’s posts to myself and the turning of all my tags into categories, they’re livable issues. I’ll have to delete all the categories, make some real categories, then begin the painful process of changing all 97ish of my posts into those new categories…

The Feedburner address has been updated, so all my subscribers should be seeing the new site, and the blogspot blog will be set to permanent forward here shortly. I’m sure I’ll be seeing a drop in my intense google traffic, at least for a few months until I’m recached, but it’s a worthwhile price to pay, methinks.

Welcome home, Socialist Gamer Review, to your own domain like all the “cool kids.”

So, why all this "Socialist Gamer" business

      By Ravenhawk | May 12, 2007

I believe its a rather common thought when one looks at the title of my blog is, “Why so specific? Why do we care if you’re a socialist as opposed to any other gamer?”
After all, you don’t see republican gamers or fascist gamers touting their political orientation with the fact that they game, do you? (Well, yes, actually, you do. Do a quick google search..)
The difference of course being that many people figure socialists would be opposed to games on principle due to the fact that you could be doing more productive things with your time that just sitting around and entertaining yourself.
Well, first, it’s my opinion that that is wrong. However, rather than go into that at the moment, I’m instead working on a big long article to back up my point on the matter.
The difference is really, I think, if you’re talking to your typical run-of-the-mill conservative or liberal gamer, its pretty easy to tell. However, if you’re talking to a socialist gamer, unless you get them on some rather specific subjects, you’re not going to be able to tell that they’re a socialist.

Besides that, calling yourself a “Communist Gamer” is just oxymoronic. Socialist Gamer I can rationalize. Communism is a different matter altogether. Of course, calling yourself a communist period when the world is still a capitalist one is rather contradictory. But Shhh, don’t quote me on that one. I wouldn’t want to distance my peers or… something…

      Until next time, Comrades.

      Minor fixes

      By Ravenhawk | May 7, 2007

For some reason my Review of Puzzle Pirates was turned into a draft instead of a post. It’s been fixed, along with a few spelling errors within the post itself. I know I missed a post earlier in the week, but I was rather buried with programming work (Which I didn’t end up getting done…) and the interviews and stuff.

However, my failed work did inspire me a bit and I have a rather entertaining post which I’ll be putting up later in the week. And by entertaining I mean “It’d be funny if it wasn’t true or wasn’t applying to me.”

      Until Next time, Comrades.

      In search of tag clouds

      By Ravenhawk | April 15, 2007

I’ve been reading recently about Search Engine Optimization and increasing your page rank. Like most bloggers, I’d to make my blog accessible to the widest possible number of people. This is hard to do when you’re buried at the bottom of google.

In my reading, I saw a lot of this speaking of your inbound/outbound link ratio. Basically, you want number to be equal or better, else you’re leaking page rank. Well, according to my google webmaster tools page, I have 32 inbound and 42 outbound. I figured an easy way to remedy this would be to build a tag cloud. However, as I began googling how to make a tag cloud, it turned out to be not so simple.

There were many plugins available for wordpress users, but I use blogger. Searching specifically for blogger, I found a lot of posts, however, most of them led back to the same post which talked about how to build a tag cloud on the new blogger. I use the version of blogger before the horrible WYSIWYG thing was put it: My template editing is html. Without a CSS sheet to edit, I couldn’t use the system.

Finally, I discovered that Technorati has a system that you just stick into your blog and it reads your top tags list off their site which is in turn reading it off your feed..
A pain, yes, but hopefully it’ll work.

I’ve stuck it on the left, it’s supposed to take awhile before it pings for the list, so I’ll have to wait to see if its working.

      Edit: April 16th, 9:36 am

Well, Alas, it still isn’t showing my tags, maybe I did it wrong, but I don’t appear to have anything resembling a tag cloud. I guess this is a failed experiment, but I refuse to move over to the new blogger as I would have to totally recode my layout since the new blogger doesn’t have any three column templates.
