    • So, why all this "Socialist Gamer" business

      By Ravenhawk | May 12, 2007

I believe its a rather common thought when one looks at the title of my blog is, “Why so specific? Why do we care if you’re a socialist as opposed to any other gamer?”
After all, you don’t see republican gamers or fascist gamers touting their political orientation with the fact that they game, do you? (Well, yes, actually, you do. Do a quick google search..)
The difference of course being that many people figure socialists would be opposed to games on principle due to the fact that you could be doing more productive things with your time that just sitting around and entertaining yourself.
Well, first, it’s my opinion that that is wrong. However, rather than go into that at the moment, I’m instead working on a big long article to back up my point on the matter.
The difference is really, I think, if you’re talking to your typical run-of-the-mill conservative or liberal gamer, its pretty easy to tell. However, if you’re talking to a socialist gamer, unless you get them on some rather specific subjects, you’re not going to be able to tell that they’re a socialist.

Besides that, calling yourself a “Communist Gamer” is just oxymoronic. Socialist Gamer I can rationalize. Communism is a different matter altogether. Of course, calling yourself a communist period when the world is still a capitalist one is rather contradictory. But Shhh, don’t quote me on that one. I wouldn’t want to distance my peers or… something…

      Until next time, Comrades.

      Persistant Browser Based Games

      By Ravenhawk | March 12, 2007

Back before I had a good computer that could handle games with any semblance of graphics or CPU usage, I used to play a lot of Browser Based RPGs. Regardless of the simple graphics and equally simple gameplay, many of them were quite fun.

Now-a-days a couple things have happened. The first is that a flood of Crime and Pimp theme games flooded the market. Second was that I began playing games that are actually downloadable.

But recently, as I’m considering learning PHP, I began looking into the Browser Based games again, this time from a developing standpoint. As I was searching, I discovered the “Persistant Browser Based Game” movement. Basically, its all about coining a term, and therefore a more solid identity, for the type of games I used to play.

While still being a very broad genre, PBBG’s are games which require nothing but an internet browser and in which progress is made through more than one gaming session.

It may seem like an insignificant movement to many, but its about time this group had its own identity..
