    • Gunster can still be played! (sort of)

      By Ravenhawk | May 29, 2007

So, I was playing around with my google rankings for various search terms when I randomly started reading the wikipedia page for gunster. From this page, I found out that there is another version of gunster out there besides rain of bullets.

It’s called Gunstrike: Reloaded Bullets. Now, before you all rejoice, note there is a catch: The game isn’t in english. Gunster is like a whole lot of other online games in that it was made in Korea, not the US. That version of gunster is still alive, but its in korean. But heck, judging from all the traffic I’ve been getting from people looking for gunster private servers, I’m sure some of ye are into the game enough to play it in another language.

I’ve played a few MMOs that were in korean. Gunster is rather straight forward, so it wouldn’t be that hard to play the game. At least there are no little npcs who you have to wonder what they’re saying…

While its not exactly a private server, so it won’t be the same game, it’s something. And who knows, if it gets popular enough, maybe some of those private server types will latch on and translate it bit-wise. (Like private Ragnarok Online servers do)

      Gunster Private Servers and Petition

      By Ravenhawk | May 19, 2007

So, I’ve been getting some google hits lately from people looking for Gunster private servers. Sadly, it was just google playing a trick on them. I repeated the search to see what they were seeing. It took text from my post about gunster being gone and my post about private servers and put them together to make it sound like I’d seen a gunster private server or… something.

Not wanting to let people down like that, I went forth on a search for a gunster private server. Sadly, I failed. I don’t think gunster was around long enough/big enough for people to make private servers. However, I did find this petition to bring gunster back. It’s not much, but it’s something, I guess. I signed it. I’d like to see gunster brought back.

      Gunster is gone?

      By Ravenhawk | April 25, 2007

Being caught up with my homework lately, I haven’t been doing much MMOing besides taking care of my crew/flag on Puzzle Pirates. So, I was surprised when I went to look up gunster earlier today only to discover that it was gone.
This is indeed a great loss. It wasn’t a very well known game, but ijji had quite the gem with that one. Gunster basically played like an online Metal Slug. In fact, as far as my memory served me, it was almost a metal slug clone.
I guess there just aren’t enough oldschool third person shooter playing gamers on the internet. I officially have a new game to add to the “Awesome game graveyard.”

      Until next time, comrades.

Pros and cons of degrading items

      By Ravenhawk | November 26, 2006

Degrading items are an interesting issue to look at. On the one hand we have the example of puzzle pirates: The economy flourishes as people actually need to continually buy things. The normal inflation which plagues mmorpgs is staved off. In this example, the things which gamers don’t really need; fancy clothes, super weapons, etc. Wear away. The things that are more imperative adn difficult to get such as ships and homes, don’t. That, along with the vague terms used to describe age, prevent a sense of temporance from settling over the items.
To use a different example, look to the game Gunbound. Gunbound for a long time had certain items that could only be purchased through a cash shop and other items which you would purchase using your ingame money to buy. Nothing wore out, but things were expensive. At one point, they decided it would be a good idea to make it all the items cheaper, however, you no longer purchased them to own them. Instead you were “renting” them. Basically, they wear away after a short time. You could rent weekly or monthly.
At that point, I quit playing the game. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fun game, I loved playing. But if I no longer had the ability to own my items, if all my work getting enough to buy them would be thwarted after a week or a month, I didn’t want to bother. Of course, also on my mind was no doubt the fact that I had nearly gained enough to buy an item I wanted when suddenly I could no longer own things. And they didn’t drop the prices enough.
It wasn’t like you were going to be paying for that item on a weekly basis proportionate to what it would have cost you before. They dropped prices, but in the end you were paying more.
I recently started playing two games which implement a very similar system. Golf King and Gunster. Both allow you to buy items with your money, but they wear out after a month. I’m yet to be playing enough to see the end result in these games. I think in Golf King it won’t have much of an effect as I believe that the only items which actually change the way you play is your gold clubs. I’ve only played Gunster for a night, so I shall not even attempt to critique its system.
On another note, those two games are great fun. I’ll likely write a review for one, if not both of them soon. Relatively soon anyway. My laptop, which is my gaming machine, keeps being swagged by my parental unit who is staying for a couple weeks.

      Until next time, comrades.
